My Sisters’ House Shines at the 2024 Markel Magnolia Cup!

07 August 2024

We’re still buzzing from an incredible week at ‘Glorious Goodwood’ where My Sisters’ House had the honour of being the official charity for the Markel Magnolia Cup. We created some very special memories and we wanted to share some highlights and heartfelt moments with you all.

Ladies' Day Magic

Thursday, 1st August, was a day to remember! Ladies' Day was our time to shine with the thrilling Markel Magnolia Cup. The race featured some truly amazing women — all non-professional jockeys who balanced full-time jobs, family life, and early morning training sessions to compete. These women not only took on the challenge of learning to ride a racehorse but also raised crucial funds for My Sisters’ House through their sponsorship efforts. Their dedication and perseverance were nothing short of inspiring.

We want to congratulate of them, and in particular to Lizzie Jelfs, an Australia-based TV presenter, who was victorious on the day and winner of the Markel Magnolia Cup 2024.

Lizzie said, "The charity aspect of this is really important to me. It’s a local charity supporting women. This race brings together different women from all walks of life, and I think it’s important to show that you can do anything at any age. I’ve got two kids, I’m probably the oldest in this field, I’ve never ridden in a race, but I thought, why not, give it a go. It has been a great experience”.

Spreading the Word

Throughout the week, we had countless opportunities to raise awareness about our services in the Arun and Chichester area. Being at Goodwood Racecourse every day, we got to meet so many wonderful people, have important conversations, and share our mission. The setting was perfect—beautiful surroundings, delicious food, and a community spirit that warmed our hearts.

Regency Ball Fun

A highlight of the week was the Regency Ball which took place in the splendour of Goodwood House. Our team was privileged to be part of this glamorous evening, where we continued our fundraising efforts in style. It was an evening filled with elegance, laughter, and generous support for our cause – with many, many rides on the incredible vintage carousel.

Candle-lit horse race!

Another of the spectacular evening's events was the unique candle-lit horse race on the lawns of Goodwood House. This mesmerizing spectacle harks back to the inaugural public race meeting held at Goodwood by the third Duke of Richmond in 1802. During that historic race, the Duke and his horse, Cedar, were bested by the Prince of Wales on Rebel, who claimed the winning purse of 100 guineas. The modern rendition takes place through the parkland in the dead of night, with the course illuminated by flares just as it was in the 18th century.

The evening then culminated with the punk princess, Toyah Willcox, performing live in a fabulous sequined dress in the gloriously decorated outdoor marquee.

On the Ground Efforts

Our team was out in force every day, proudly wearing our purple high-vis vests and collecting donations in the summer sun. We handed out hundreds of charity flip-flops—because let’s face it, fancy shoes and heat don’t always mix well! The support we received from the Goodwood staff was phenomenal. From the friendly gatekeepers to the hardworking office staff and event organisers, everyone was behind us, and it made a huge difference.
